Paul Schofield

The Wagner Society of Ohio welcomed Paul Schofield to its meeting on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 7:30 P.M. in the Canton Museum of Art. Paul is a leading expert on Wagner and Buddhism. Schofield maintains that the Ring and Parsifal together constitute an unbroken story-line. The story-line begins with Wotan breaking a branch of the World Ash-tree and Alberich stealing the gold of the Rhine. The separation of Spear and Grail leads to the reunion of the Spear and Grail in the Hall of Monsalvat at the conclusion of Parsifal. A former Buddhist monk, Mr. Schofield showed how Wagner incorporated an understanding of karma and rebirth -which understanding first appeared in Die Sieger- into both the Ring and Parsifal.
